THE PLAY

A thriller, set in a station waiting-room in the late 20s. A particularly annoying young man, Teddie, pulls the communication cord and accidentally strands six passengers at a small Cornish wayside station during a terrible downpour. Despite the psychic stationmaster's weird stories of a ghost train, they decide to stay the night there. Unfortunately, the stories seem to be true, as the stationmaster is discovered dead just outside the door, with lantern raised high to summon the ghostly express!

A mysterious woman, Julia, appears out of the storm, pursued by her brother and a doctor, who tell the stranded passengers that Julia is disturbed and drawn to the station whenever the ghost train is due. She refuses to leave and in the end they leave her there. And then the train does thunder through the station, and Julia collapses in hysterics.

This is followed by ghostly apparitions prowling around outside the waiting-room: when they leave, the passengers are urged to make a run for it - but Teddie refuses and takes action. As the train approaches, he switches the points to run it into a siding and shoots at the ghostly figures. Revealing himself to be a detective Inspector, he explains that the ghost train is merely a cover for gun running. The Bolshevik smugglers had a large shipment to make tonight and could not have witnesses around. The gang is now being rounded up by his men and the mastermind - Julia - apprehended.
