THE FARNDALE AVENUE HOUSING ESTATE TOWNSWOMEN'S GUILD DRAMATIC SOCIETY'S PRODUCTION OF "MACBETH"
by David McGillivray & Walter Zerlin Jnr

Produced by Mary Frost

THE PLAY

Pure farcical comedy. The first of the Farndale series, in which our ladies mount an assault on the classics with a startlingly original production of Macbeth staged to get them to the Welwyn Garden City Drama Finals. Undeterred by any problems, such as Lady Macbeth failing to turn up and hapless stage manager Henry Pratt being pressed into the role, or by the curse of the "Scottish Play", they press on in an attempt to impress adjudicator George Peach. Not even time running out, leaving just nine minutes in which to complete all three hours of Shakesperean drama, can stop them. Nor will injuries, a wheelchair-bound witch, collapsing scenery, lost props...

FROM THE GROUP

This was my first venture into producing and looking back I think Iwas crazy to  choose such a complicated debut!
Having recently re-read this play I was completely overwhelmed by the complexity of characters, props, costumes, changes etc. However, in my naivete I duly cast the play.
I was fortunate in having an experienced acting force who threw themselves into the project with great enthusiasm. I also had a strong backstage crew - which was just as well as all sorts of strange props and effects were required. The rehearsals were chaotic but fun and we had a ball as did the audience. Altogether an enjoyable experience for one and all.
