THE PLAY
Thriller, set in the 1950s. Discredited psychiatrist Maurice lives with his manic-depressive wife Janet and sister Stella in a small cottage, owned by his half-brother Colin, by a lake. The thoroughly unpleasant Colin lives with his wife Iris on the other side of the lake. Maurice intends to leave Janet and move away with Stella, but will not do so without leaving Janet at least financially secure. To do that, he needs to get Colin to agree to the sale of a mill in which all three siblings have a stake.
True to form, Colin is unwilling to do anything to help - in fact, even the scandal that ruined Maurice is his fault - and Maurice and Stella will no longer put up with it. When Colin threatens to sell the house they occupy, they determine to kill him. As the lake is frozen but thawing, their plan is to make it appear that he accidentally fell through the ice. Everything goes wrong from the start, though, once Colin is dead: Janet and the maid return home too soon, the mysterious detective Howard is taking a keen interest and Iris believes she has poisoned Colin with morphine.
Once Iris' innocence is proved, suspicion falls on
Maurice and he can see no other way out than to have Janet also killed. He
hypnotises her and primes her to commit suicide, but she is saved by Howard's
intervention. Maurice and Stella are both arrested: tired and unwilling to
fight, Maurice is prepared to confess all.
