THE PLAY

Modern-day comedy, set in a cricket pavilion. Roger, captain of the local cricket team, and long-suffering wife Miriam are preparing for the day's match as the team begin to arrive, each with their own set of problems to worry about. Stalwarts Kevin and Maggie are happy, which makes them in a minority of two. Self-made man Dennis has sent his wife off to look at houses alone. Bob is torn between helping his ex-wife and the grief that gives him from current wife Ginnie. And yuppie Alex has turned up with bored go-go dancer Sharon, last night's conquest, who hates cricket.

As the afternoon unfolds, the problems magnify. Miriam considers her tea ruined because she has to serve it earlier than planned - and wants to know what the big secret is about Roger in Dorking last year. Ginnie is considering divorcing Bob. Sharon has locked herself in the toilet and Maggie is busy winding up both Dennis and Alex. And the team is losing.

These events all culminate just as Roger is in bat and trying to save the day. Bob fights with Alex, but at least makes up with Ginnie. Dennis's wife arrives and sets fire to his brand-new BMW. Roger is forced to admit to a brief infidelity in Dorking: Miriam briefly threatens to leave him, but doesn't...and just then, it starts to rain!
