CHILDREN'S DAY
by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall

Produced by Mary Bailey

THE PLAY

Modern-day comedy, set in a London house. Emma is organising a birthday party for her son Adam, with the help of her best friend Polly and the nanny, Mavis. Since separating from her husband Robin, Emma has become friendly with her solicitor Tom and he has turned up to be Mr Lolllipop, the children's conjuror. Polly's husband Peter is reluctantly drafted in to help, and to try and allay Polly's fears that he is having an affair. Robin, too, arrives, seeking a reconciliation that Emma secretly wants too.

Against a backdrop of catastrophes caused by the unseen children upstairs, the adults wrangle with increasingly childish acrimoniousness about the most trivial of things. With relations already strained, the arrival of Sophie kicks off another bout of disagreement: Sophie being Robin's ex-girlfriend, Peter's current affair and Tom's daughter. Tom vows to bring her back to the straight and narrow, but she sneaks out and leaves for Tangiers instead. Polly announces she is pregnant, cheerful because it means nine months of non-stop misery for Peter. And Emma and Robin finally do get around to consider moving back in together and starting over.
