WE FOUND LOVE AND AN EXQUISITE SET OF PORCELAIN FIGURINES ABOARD THE SS "FARNDALE AVENUE"

THE PLAY

One of a series of modern-day plays about the (mis)adventures of the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society as they attempt to entertain an audience with their latest self-penned masterpiece. This one is a romance set aboard a shipboard cruise back in the swinging twenties. Or, at least, it would be, if the cast could stop bickering amongst themselves, the stage crew could pick up their cues and any of the actors could remember what they were supposed to be doing or saying on the stage. Despite that, they struggle through the plot: Constance, sailing to Naples to marry Beauregard, meets up with childhood sweetheart Noel. As Beauregard is secretly also on board, the ensuing love triangle develops on the voyage, inevitable shipwreck, sojourn on a desert island island and eventual rescue. Nobody is quite sure how it finishes, though: that part gets rather overlooked amidst the chaos. It's a comedy, by the way.

FROM THE GROUP

Here we go again! Bus iness as usual for the Farndale ladies. This time the Townswomen's guild is putting on a play in the style of a twenties light romance a la Noel Coward set aboard a luxury liner. We juggled around with the parts in order to accommodate more people and changed some of the characters around. We also padded it out a little as it was rather short. Musical numbers were embellished and enlarged upon.
As usual with this type of play lots of unusual props were required including a whole shoal of luminous fish, a stuffed seagull and a giant spider. Good job we have such an efficient crew. Judith Greenfield, once again using her comic timing to the full, played Nora who was taking the role of the Noel Coward style character. A perfect foil to her Noel was Ann Burfoot in the role of the imperious leading lady Thelma. Short tempered and over-bearing Thelma tries to rule the roost but is thwarted in this by Chairman of the society Mrs.Reece, played as usual with great spirit by Cheree Buckler. Another resounding success.
