THE PLAY
Pantomime. It's Aladdin - surely the plot doesn't need explaining? Well, okay - in this version, evil wizard Abanazar frames Widow Twankey's youngest son Aladdin for theft, then uses him to retrieve a magic lamp from a mysterious cave. When Aladdin refuses to hand the lamp over, Abanazar imprisons him - but the genie of the lamp helps Aladdin escape. The power of the genie not only makes Aladdin rich, but helps get him engaged to Cha-Ming, the Emperor's daughter. Disaster nearly strikes when Abanazer gets hold of the lamp and banishes everyone to Egypt. Luckily, they have a magic ring to help them get back in time to overthrow Abanazar and live happily ever after, with plenty of jelly babies for everyone.
FROM THE GROUP
At last a Panto proper, well almost. We cut the singing and dancing, and cut
the chorus of children. And it worked: even the author who was in the audience
was surprised, calling the result 'pleasingly succinct'. A female principal boy,
a male dame, a comedy duo, a genie: we kept all the other ingredients that go to
making a traditional Panto.
A difficult play to rehearse, as so much depends on special effects and audience
participation. It didn't really sparkle until the first night.
Mike seemed to grow another hand as he juggled sounds, lighting and special
effects. He does love being kept busy backstage.
Dave made an excellent Dame with so many costume changes he had to have his own
dresser and make up lady! And what about Stuart in all that sparkling body
paint? He was in his element.
An enjoyable end result for all concerned.
