MARY BAILEY

Mary's name first appeared on our programmes back in 1990, helping out Front of House in "Murder In Company". A very experienced actress already, with a long association with amateur dramatics around Guildford, it didn't take long - one production, in fact - before she was treading the boards for us. Ever-versatile, Mary went on to do a considerable number of roles - from stern prison guard to evil pantomime Black Queen to a swansong as the weary and regretful village doctor in "Cat's Cradle". During that time, she also produced "Children's Day" for us but - perhaps more importantly - managed wardrobes for any number of productions with an almost supernatural excellence. Whatever costume, however obscure, you could go to Mary and she would have it put together and looking just right with lightning speed. Some of our most visually effective plays, particularly the series of panto-cum-fairy-tales that we did in the 1990s owed a great deal to Mary's needle and thread.

Always cheerful, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about all things to do with the stage, it was a great loss to us when Mary and Leonard moved away at the end of 2001. It was a unanimous and easy decision to recognise Mary's contribution to the group with a Life Membership award. They still support us, attending every performance they can and Mary never fails to send a card to the cast and crew for opening nights.

Mary as wicked Mrs Bell (Death And The Maiden, 1992), as Miss Marple (Murder At The Vicarage, 1993) and proud mother Mrs Scudamore (The Brides Of March, 1993)...

...Freeloading Betsy-Jane (Spring And Port Wine, 1994), as the spoof Miss Maple (Murdered To Death, 1994) and the regal Queen of Hearts (Alice In Wonderland, 1995)...

...Eccentric dowser Mrs Crabtree (Hans, The Witch & The Gobbin, 1998), menacing as The Black Queen (The Witch & The Wiffler, 2000) and as world-weary Dr Merton (Cat's Cradle, 2001).
