Steve joined us almost by default, back in 2002, having taken up courting Cheree at about that time. He fitted in from the start, pitching in with all sorts of backstage and construction activities and proving extremely handy with a wide variety of power tools. From there, it was a short step to emptying his and Cheree's house almost every production to provide our stage furniture, serving on committee, hosting just about every social activity going and making innumerable cups of excellent coffee. Not without versatility, he could also do excellent tea...
Short as we were of male actors at the time, Steve was inevitably approached about the prospect of facing an audience. Proving willing enough to have a stab at it, he started rehearsals for "Season's Greetings", but eventually wound up debuting in the next production: "They Came To A City". Several more roles followed, including stepping in at literally the last minute to save the day in "The Odd Couple", when the original cast member injured his back. His last performance with us was as the surly chauffeur Johnson in "Wanted! - One Body", thereafter he and Cheree - now happily married - moved down to the tranquility of the West Country for a welcome change of pace.
Although not with us for as long as some, both serving and ex-members, Steve threw himself into all our activities with such enthusiasm and commitment that it made a huge difference to the group and there really was no option but to present him with a Life membership award in exchange! Fortunately, Steve and Cheree both keep in touch and we regularly see them at performances and social events.
